This guide explains how to import photos into Vektor.io, which image formats are supported, and what is required for photos to be automatically placed on the map.
Note: Importing photos is only possible for users with Manage or Modify permissions in the project.
Vektor.io may also be integrated with a document management system (project bank), in which case materials can be imported through that integration.
Supported Image Formats
Vektor.io currently supports the following image formats:
.jpg
.jpeg
It is recommended to verify this in your camera settings.
Most phones save images in JPG format by default, but some devices may use other formats (e.g., HEIC). If necessary, change the camera’s image format setting to JPG / JPEG.
GPS Location Data (Required for Map Placement)
For a photo to be automatically placed on the map in Vektor.io, it must contain:
Latitude
Longitude
This information is stored in the image metadata (EXIF) at the time the photo is taken.
Important
Photos without location data can be opened from the file tree.
However, they will not be placed on the map.
Currently, the only way to place photos on the map is by having GPS coordinates stored in the image metadata.
Manual map placement is not available at this time.
Make Sure Location Data Is Saved in Photos
Android
Open Settings
Go to Location → make sure location is turned on
Open Apps → Camera
Allow Location
In camera settings, make sure Save location / Location tags is enabled
iPhone / iPad
Open Settings
Select Privacy & Security
Select Location Services
Select Camera
Choose While Using the App
To verify location data:
Open the photo in the Photos app and swipe up — if a map appears, the location has been saved.
Three Ways to Import Photos into Vektor.io
Scenario 1: Transfer Photos to a Computer and Import
Recommended for large photo batches.
Step 1: Transfer Photos from Your Phone to a Computer
For example:
OneDrive
Google Drive
iCloud
USB cable
Other cloud service
Step 2: Import Photos into Vektor.io
Open Vektor.io and your desired project
Select Upload
Choose one or multiple .jpg / .jpeg files
Vektor.io reads the GPS metadata
Photos are automatically placed on the map (if location data is included)
Scenario 2: Upload Photos Directly from Your Phone
Open a browser and go to:
https://projects.vektor.io/Log in
Open the project
Press Upload
Select photos from your gallery
Confirm the upload
If the photos contain GPS data and are in JPG/JPEG format, they will be automatically placed on the map.
Scenario 3: Import via Project Bank Integration
If the project includes integration with a document management system:
First upload the photos to the project bank
-
Ensure that:
The file format is JPG/JPEG
GPS metadata is included
The material will transfer to Vektor.io through the integration
The exact process depends on your organization’s configuration.
Common Situations
| Situation | What Happens |
|---|---|
| The photo is JPG and contains GPS data | Automatically placed on the map |
| The photo is JPG but does not contain GPS data | Visible in the file tree, not placed on the map |
| The photo is not JPG/JPEG | Not supported |
| The user does not have Manage/Modify permissions | Upload is not allowed |
Summary
Successful photo import into Vektor.io requires:
File format: .jpg or .jpeg
GPS location saved at the time the photo was taken
Manage or Modify permissions
-
Import via:
Computer upload
Direct mobile upload
